What is a ‘Mix Doctor’ session?
Acoustically treated studios and world-class monitoring are often luxuries out of the budget of bedroom producers, and the best speakers in the world will still not reveal the fine details in your mix unless placed in a well-balanced room. Furthermore, many producers are too attached to their projects to be able to hand over control to a mix engineer, but find themselves limited by their home setup when honing in on the finer details. Increasing number of our clients are choosing to hire our mix room and our senior engineers David Holmes and Giles Barrett for ‘Mix Doctor’ sessions, where we review a mix or stems on our ATC monitors and assist with the surgical adjustments that add the finishing touches to the mix.
What is ‘Finishing Production’?
The rapid development of DAWs over recent years has allowed producers to create previously unthinkable work using just a laptop and a pair of headphones. However, many producers still choose to use a professional studio to add the finishing touches to their production and mix. Sometimes this is as simple as needing the professional listening environment that an acoustically treated room and high-end monitoring can provide, and our ATC SCM25 and 45 monitors are renowned by mic engineers the world over for their accuracy and detail. Sometimes a production needs a bit more than a final mix though - it could be anything from:
Re-recording vocals through vintage microphones
Re-amping guitar tones through tube amplifiers and high-end recording chains
Replaying software synths through analogue synthesizers, piano, Hammond or Wurlitzer
Replacing plugins with hardware outboard compressors, EQs or delays
Sometimes these little details are all a production needs to stand out from the tens of thousands of tracks that get released every day. Get in touch to discuss how we can help with your next production.
