The Ship
Recording On The Lightship
Lightship 95 is a 550-tonne ship that was moored on the Goodwin Sands, off the South Coast of Kent until 2003. It was converted to a recording studio by producer Ben Phillips, who ran the studio til 2017 and has written about the ship’s history and the conversion process.
In 2018 Sound on Sound magazine made a short documentary about the studio. Whilst the lightship studio is now run independently of Soup Studios, the documentary still provides some useful background and answers the question: why a ship?
Some more background on the conversion process is provided by Harry Dwyer’s Foam Mining video on YouTube. Some further background on the studio’s time as part of Soup can be found in the Sound on Sound article from 2019.
Moored at Trinity Buoy Wharf, across the river from the O2, Lightship 95 is accessible from central London via the Jubilee Line and by road via the A13 and the Blackwall Tunnel.
